This function is declared non-inline to work around a compiler bug in g++ 2.96.
Making it inline seems to cause problems in the optimizer.
Reimplemented from TypedReferenceCount.
Reimplemented in DisplayRegion, StereoDisplayRegion, and RocketRegion.
